May 26th 2016 - Getting Away With It: Beer x 80's Electronica at Hop Burns & Black

Matthew Curtis April 25, 2016

£20 Per Head // 7 - 9.30pm, Thursday 26th May 2016

Hop Burns & Black, 38 East Dulwich Road, SE22 9AX

6 x tutored beer courses & great tunes all night.

Book now

When I was a kid, as well as being able to raid my Dad’s fridge for beer, I was also privileged to leaf through his extensive record collection. From Radiohead to Pink Floyd, Roxy Music to Erasure and Rory Gallagher to Suede, his collection pretty much had every base covered. Music has, and always will be, my first love and for me there’s nothing better than kicking back with a great beer and some excellent tunes.

Two bands that were notably absent from his collection however, were Joy Division and New Order. These were one of the first bands where I started collecting records without my Dad’s influence. I became somewhat obsessed with everything New Order and this eventually led me to the discovery of frontman Bernard Sumner’s collaborative project with The Smiths’ Johnny Marr: Electronic.

Revisiting these tracks recently while thinking what to do for my next tasting at Hop Burns and Black, it hit me. We’ve already done nights featuring some scintillating punk and post-punk tracks, so now it’s time to put the guitars down and enjoy the synthesized sounds of the 80’s. You can expect the likes of the aforementioned New Order and Electronic as well as Erasure, Yazoo, (basically anything Vince Clarke was involved with) Pet Shop Boys and more.

We’ll work our way through six exceptional beers in my usual energetic and eclectic fashion and appreciate a different track at the end of each course. This isn’t beer and music matching, it’s just great beer, great music and lots of conversation. Our last two events sold out quickly, so make sure you grab your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are just £20 and you can get hold of them here. We look forward to seeing you there!

Beer List //

We want to keep some element of surprise on the night so we're not revealing any specifics of what tracks we'll be playing, but with a few tickets still available we thought we'd try and tempt you with the killer beer list we've put together.

  • Yeastie Boys - Digital IPA
